Phoenix is closed today due to rain

I thought I'd share a little of this morning's adventure. It rained,... a lot. We've passed the all time daily record, held from 1895 when they started measuring. It basically shut the metropolitan area down.

We don't usually have visible water in the washes, creek beds and rivers. Now we have torrents of flood water in our roads and parks.

Growing up in Michigan, rain was nothing to be concerned with. Here in Phoenix, it's a big deal. We get flooding when there's one inch. This morning, parts of the valley got as much as five inches. The freeways are littered with cars doing double-duty as submarines. We're trapped in our part of town.

A brand new river rushes across the road and through the golf course.

My wife and I are both home from work. I had to rescue her in my truck this morning when her car sputtered out after passing through a flooding intersection. The Department of Public Safety wanted to keep the highways as clear as possible, so both of our offices were closed for the day.

Our neighborhood streets were full of trash, where water had obviously flowed through the night.

School was still in session though. Luckily both schools are close and I was able to get the kids in safely. Everywhere, there's water.

Our backyard is a mud pit.

Either way, we got off easy. We scored a very rare "Snow Day" to stay home from work, and we don't have to rent scuba gear to retrieve our vehicles. Being trapped in our little part of Phoenix is nothing compared to what others had to go through today. Our local news was so excited to report on something other than sunshine and heat:
